The murder of senior Maharashtra leader Baba Siddique has thrust the name of notorious gangster Lawrence Bishnoi into the spotlight. Accusations have been made, implicating the Bishnoi gang in the crime. While police investigations are ongoing, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has taken to social media to present his perspective on the case, drawing attention to the deep-seated animosity Bishnoi harbors towards Bollywood star Salman Khan.
The origin of this animosity traces back to a 1998 blackbuck poaching incident during the filming of "Hum Saath-Saath Hain" in Rajasthan. The incident outraged the Bishnoi community, who hold the blackbuck in high regard. Two decades later, Bishnoi, then 31, publicly declared his intent to harm Salman Khan during a court appearance in Jodhpur in 2018. He stated, "We will kill Salman Khan. Everyone will know once we take action."
This threat has not been a passing one. Salman Khan has been subjected to multiple threats since then, culminating in an incident in April of this year. Two shooters, allegedly members of the Bishnoi gang, were arrested after firing shots outside Khan's Bandra residence. Now, the alleged link to Siddique's murder has surfaced through a Facebook post claiming that those who aid Salman Khan and the Dawood gang should "keep their accounts in order." The post was attributed to Shubham Rameshwar Lonkar, suspected to be an associate of the Bishnoi gang.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) paints a picture of a sophisticated criminal enterprise under Bishnoi's leadership. They state that he commands a 700-member gang, dispersed throughout the country, including skilled shooters. This network extends beyond India's borders, with connections to notorious gangsters such as Goldy Brar, Sachin Thapan, and others, along with alleged ties to "pro-Khalistani" elements in Nepal and other nations. Despite being incarcerated since 2015, Bishnoi's influence is said to reach across state lines and international boundaries through his network of associates.
