The Indian cricket team is facing a potential injury crisis ahead of the first Test against New Zealand, scheduled to begin on Wednesday, October 16th at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Star batter Shubman Gill, who has been in exceptional form with three centuries in eight Test matches in 2024, is doubtful for the match due to neck and shoulder pain. The 25-year-old informed the team management about the niggle on Monday, and a decision on his availability will be made on Wednesday morning.
Gill's absence would be a significant blow to the Indian team, as he has established himself as a crucial part of the batting order at the No. 3 position. With no like-for-like replacement available, either KL Rahul or Sarfaraz Khan would be called upon to fill the void. Gill's impressive performances in 2024, with 662 runs including three centuries and two half-centuries, have cemented his place as a key player in the team.
Adding to India's injury worries, star pacer Mohammed Shami is also struggling with a swelling on his knee. Captain Rohit Sharma admitted that it is difficult to assess Shami's availability for both the upcoming New Zealand series and the crucial Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. Shami has been recovering from the knee injury, but the recent swelling has set back his progress. He is currently at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) working with the physios and doctors.
The team management is cautious about rushing Shami back into action before he is fully fit. Rohit emphasized that they want to ensure Shami is 100 percent recovered before returning to international cricket, especially considering the importance of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The team is hoping for a quick recovery for both Gill and Shami, as their absence could significantly impact India's performance in the upcoming Test series.
