The ongoing crisis in Manipur continues to escalate, with the state's chief minister, N Biren Singh, reiterating his belief that foreign actors are fueling the violence. His claim is bolstered by the recent arrest of a Burmese cadre of the Kuki National Army by the Assam Rifles along the international border. This arrest, according to Singh, substantiates his consistent stance that external forces are playing a significant role in destabilizing the state.
Singh's accusation of a foreign hand in the violence is not without controversy. Critics argue that this narrative deflects attention from internal factors contributing to the conflict. The ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities have been ongoing for months, driven by complex socio-economic and political issues. However, Singh maintains that the arrest of the Burmese Kuki National Army cadre is strong evidence of foreign involvement.
In a separate development, the Manipur government has revoked the temporary suspension of internet services in five districts: Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Kakching. This decision comes after the suspension, implemented on September 10th, sparked protests from students who demanded the removal of the DGP and security advisor for their perceived failure to handle militant attacks. The protests turned violent, leading to clashes with security forces and injuries to over 80 individuals.
While the internet services have been restored, the government has urged all internet users to use the platform responsibly and refrain from activities that could necessitate future suspensions. This underscores the delicate balance between ensuring public safety and protecting the right to freedom of expression in the midst of the ongoing crisis.
