The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Haryana is facing mounting troubles as the state assembly elections approach. The release of the party's first list of candidates has triggered a wave of resignations and rebellions, leaving the BJP in a state of turmoil. This turmoil stems from the party's decision to field several 'outsiders' – candidates who have recently switched from other parties – in an attempt to achieve 'social balance' in its candidate selection. The BJP's first candidate list, released on September 4th, excluded eight sitting MLAs and included 18 turncoats from parties like the JJP, Congress, Shiromani Akali Dal, and Bahujan Samaj Party. This decision to prioritize 'outsiders' over established party members has sparked a massive exodus, with at least 12 senior leaders, including two ministers, resigning from the BJP in protest. This unrest has spread across 16 constituencies, with key figures like Haryana Power Minister Ranjit Singh Chautala and Ratia MLA Laxman Napa joining the ranks of those who have abandoned the party. The anger is palpable, with some leaders, like Minister of State for Social Justice Bishamber Valmiki, breaking down in tears after being denied a ticket.
The BJP's attempt to placate the disgruntled leaders and maintain party unity seems to be an uphill battle. While Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini insists that the party is trying to pacify the upset leaders, the situation on the ground paints a different picture. The party is struggling to contain the fallout from its candidate selection decisions and the growing discontent among its senior leadership. With just a month to go before the elections, the BJP is facing a significant challenge in uniting its ranks and regaining control over the situation.
