A 1987-batch IAS officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, he boasts an impressive educational background, holding qualifications as a chartered accountant, cost accountant, and company secretary. Throughout his career, Somanathan has served in pivotal roles at both the Centre and in his home state of Tamil Nadu. He has held key positions in the Prime Minister's Office, including as Joint Secretary and later as Additional Secretary, demonstrating his close involvement with the highest levels of government decision-making. His expertise in corporate affairs was further honed during his tenure as a Joint Secretary in the Union Ministry of Corporate Affairs and as Director for Corporate Affairs at the World Bank in Washington DC.
Somanathan's contributions to the development of Tamil Nadu are equally noteworthy. He has served as Managing Director of the Chennai Metro Rail Corporation, a crucial infrastructure project, and as Secretary to the Chief Minister, providing vital support to the state's leadership. During the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), Somanathan played a critical role as Additional Chief Secretary and Commissioner of Commercial Taxes, demonstrating his ability to navigate complex economic reforms.
