Mumbai Faces Continued Rain, Intensity May Decrease This Week
  • Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar expected to see continued rain this week.
  • IMD issued yellow alert for Mumbai and orange alert for Thane.
  • Rainfall intensity may decrease after Monday, 8:30 AM.

The monsoon season continues to bring rain to Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting that the rainfall will persist throughout the week. However, there is a likelihood of a reduction in intensity. On Monday, the IMD has issued a 'yellow' alert for Mumbai, signifying the possibility of heavy rain in isolated areas, and an 'orange' alert for Thane, indicating a higher probability of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations.

In the 24-hour period concluding at 8:30 AM on Sunday, the IMD Santacruz and Colaba observatories recorded rainfall amounts of 82.6mm and 46.4mm respectively. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's (BMC) automated weather systems recorded average rainfall amounts of 73mm in the eastern suburbs, 69mm in the western suburbs, and 51mm in the island city during the same period. In the nine-hour period ending at 5:30 AM on Sunday, the IMD Santacruz and Colaba stations recorded 8.4mm and 19.2mm rain, respectively.

IMD officials have attributed the current weather conditions in several parts of Maharashtra to favorable conditions for rainfall. Moderate to heavy showers are expected to continue until 8:30 AM on Monday, after which the intensity is anticipated to decrease. As of Sunday, the total water stock in the 7 lakes stood at 95.27% of the required quantum of 14.47 lakh million litres. This signifies a healthy water reserve, likely attributed to the sustained rainfall experienced during the monsoon season.
