The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is conducting a thorough investigation into allegations of financial misconduct at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. This investigation stems from a previous incident where a postgraduate trainee woman doctor was allegedly raped and murdered at the hospital, leading to nationwide protests. The CBI's probe into the financial irregularities is separate from the investigation into the murder case.
The CBI's Anti-Corruption Branch has uncovered substantial evidence suggesting wrongdoing by former principal Sandip Ghosh. Following a search of Ghosh's residence and the premises of other individuals involved, including former medical superintendent Sanjay Vashisth, a CBI official stated, “Bahut kuch hai (there is a lot).” This cryptic statement hints at the significant amount of evidence gathered during the searches.
The CBI's investigation began with the filing of an FIR on Saturday, targeting Sandip Ghosh and three private entities involved in supplying materials for patient care. The FIR alleges criminal conspiracy, cheating, and violations of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Following the FIR, CBI officers conducted extensive questioning of Ghosh at his residence and interrogated Vashisth and other professors involved at the medical establishment. The questioning aims to shed light on the extent of Vashisth's knowledge of the alleged financial irregularities that occurred during his tenure as MSVP (Medical Superintendent and Vice Principal).
The CBI's search extended to the ex-principal's office at the hospital and the canteen in the academic building.
