The Indian government has embarked on an ambitious project to develop 12 industrial smart cities across 10 states, with the aim of bolstering the nation's manufacturing sector and creating a robust network of industrial nodes. The project, approved by the Cabinet and announced by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, is poised to transform India's industrial landscape, generating significant economic growth and enhancing the country's global competitiveness.
The 12 smart cities will be strategically located along six major industrial corridors, spanning regions such as Uttarakhand, Punjab, Maharashtra, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Rajasthan. This strategic placement will facilitate seamless connectivity and integration within the industrial ecosystem, fostering an environment conducive to economic prosperity.
The government has allocated a substantial Rs 28,602 crore for the project, with an estimated total investment potential of around 1.52 lakh crore. The project's core focus is on creating a vibrant industrial ecosystem that attracts investments from both large anchor industries and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). This will stimulate the growth of a diverse range of industries, fostering innovation and promoting economic diversification.

The minister stated that the smart city project would directly employ nearly 10 lakh people, with an indirect impact on an additional 30 lakh jobs. The development of these world-class greenfield industrial smart cities is envisioned with an emphasis on 'plug-n-play' and 'walk-to-work' concepts.
