The Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) farmers wing in Punjab staged a protest against BJP MP Kangana Ranaut, demanding her termination from the Lok Sabha and expulsion from the BJP. The protest arose from Ranaut's controversial comments regarding the farmers' protest against the now-repealed farm laws. The protesters, members of AAP's Kisan Wing, accused Ranaut of repeatedly making inflammatory remarks against the farmers' movement and attempting to sow discord within society.
AAP Punjab MLA Jagtar Singh Dayalpura, who participated in the protest, condemned Ranaut's statements, urging legal action against her. The protesters attempted to march towards the Punjab BJP office to stage a demonstration, but were met with police barricades and briefly detained.
Ranaut's remarks, made during an interview with Hindi daily Dainik Bhaskar, suggested that a 'Bangladesh-like situation' could have occurred in India had it not been for strong leadership. She further alleged that violent incidents, including deaths and rapes, took place during the farmers' protest.
The Himachal Pradesh Assembly, under the ruling Congress, condemned Ranaut's statements, passing a resolution against them. Similar protests against her comments also took place in Haryana. The BJP, while expressing disagreement with Ranaut's views, distanced itself from her remarks, emphasizing that she is not authorized to comment on the party's policies.
The farmers' protest, which involved thousands of farmers from across India, lasted for months at Delhi's borders. The protest was ultimately successful in leading to the repeal of the controversial farm laws. The protests against Ranaut's statements highlight the ongoing tension and sensitivity surrounding the farmers' movement and the continued criticism of the government's handling of the issue.
