Heavy Rainfall Hits Ahmedabad, Schools Closed
  • Ahmedabad received 58.31 mm rainfall.
  • North Zone received highest rainfall at 74.49 mm.
  • Schools closed due to heavy rainfall warning.

Ahmedabad, India, experienced significant rainfall on Tuesday, with an average of 58.31 mm of precipitation recorded throughout the day. The rainfall was intermittent, but persistent enough to impact the city's infrastructure and daily life. The North Zone of the city received the heaviest rainfall, with a total of 74.49 mm, followed closely by the East Zone at 74.09 mm and the South Zone at 69.75 mm. This heavy rainfall led to waterlogging in several areas, particularly in the North Zone, resulting in the closure of eight underbridges.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a warning for “heavy to very heavy” rainfall in Ahmedabad on Wednesday, prompting the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) School Board to declare a holiday for all schools. This decision was made to ensure the safety of students and staff given the potential for further heavy rainfall and its associated risks. While eight underbridges were closed due to waterlogging, all but one at Chandlodiya had been cleared and reopened by Tuesday evening.

The Vasna Barrage, a key water management structure in the city, saw its water level rise to 127.50 feet on Tuesday evening. In response, 19 gates were raised by three feet and four gates by four feet to release water into the Sabarmati river. The rising water levels led to the closure of the Sabarmati Riverfront to the public for safety reasons. This incident highlights the importance of proactive measures in managing urban flooding and ensuring public safety during periods of heavy rainfall.
