'Emergency' Film Certification Still Pending, HC Told
  • CBFC tells HC 'Emergency' film is under review.
  • Petition to revoke film's certificate dismissed by HC.
  • Controversy sparked by film's sensitive theme.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court dismissed a plea seeking the revocation of the screening certificate for the film "Emergency," as the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) confirmed that the film had not yet received clearance for public viewing. The upcoming political drama directed by Kangana Ranaut, exploring the turbulent period of national emergency in 1975, has stirred controversy due to its sensitive theme, sparking criticism from various groups, notably the Shiromani Akali Dal, who demanded a ban due to the film's alleged "misrepresentation" of the Sikh community.

The petition, filed by Gurinder Singh and Jagmohan Singh, both baptised Sikhs and social workers from Mohali, argued that the CBFC should revoke the certificate and subject the film to review by prominent Sikh personalities before its release. Alternatively, they sought the deletion of scenes purportedly targeting the Sikh community with "false and erroneous facts." The petitioners also called for criminal charges against the filmmakers for allegedly defaming the Sikh community.

The CBFC, represented by additional solicitor general Satya Pal Jain, assured the court that the certification process for "Emergency" was ongoing and that the film would be granted a certificate based on existing rules and regulations. Jain emphasized the CBFC's commitment to considering all aspects of a film, ensuring that the sentiments of any religious or other groups are not offended. The High Court, accepting the CBFC's statement, dismissed the petition, with the detailed order of the proceedings pending release.

The controversy surrounding "Emergency" highlights the sensitive nature of historical narratives in cinema. The film's depiction of the 1975 emergency, a period marked by significant political and social upheaval, has triggered anxieties and concerns within specific communities. As the film's release date approaches (September 6), the debate surrounding its content and potential impact on various communities is likely to intensify, particularly if the CBFC's final certification process raises further concerns.
