The Supreme Court of India has instructed the Uttarakhand government to make a decision regarding the suspension of 14 herbal products manufactured by Patanjali Ltd. This order, issued on July 30, 2024, by a bench led by Justice Hima Kohli, followed allegations raised by the Indian Medical Association's counsel that the products had been reintroduced for sale in stores. The court has requested a report from the Uttarakhand government within two weeks.
The controversy surrounding these products stems from a prior order by the Uttarakhand government suspending their sale. However, Patanjali claimed that this suspension order was revoked on July 1st after a committee formed to investigate the matter submitted a report. Subsequently, the Uttarakhand government issued a fresh notice to Patanjali on July 8th, leaving the issue unresolved.
In an earlier hearing, Patanjali Ayurved had asserted to the court that it had directed its exclusive and franchise stores to remove the 14 suspended herbal medicines from their shelves. The company, co-founded by Baba Ramdev, who is currently facing contempt proceedings for promoting misleading advertisements in defiance of Supreme Court orders, also stated that they had requested social media platforms and e-commerce websites to remove advertisements for these products. Additionally, they claimed that media outlets associated with them or those hired specifically by the company had been instructed to cease broadcasting advertisements related to these 14 concoctions in any form.
