The Malappuram district in Kerala is facing a public health emergency as a 15-year-old boy tested positive for the deadly Nipah virus. This confirmed case has triggered a series of preventative measures aimed at containing the spread of the virus. The boy, hailing from Pandikkad, is currently undergoing treatment at the Government Medical College Hospital in Kozhikode.

In response to the confirmed case, district authorities have implemented restrictions in the Pandikkad and Anakkayam panchayats. This includes the closure of schools, colleges, madrasas, anganwadis, and tuition centers. The decision to close these institutions was made as the boy attends a school in Anakkayam. Public gatherings, especially weddings and other social events, have also been discouraged and restricted to the minimum number of guests.

The authorities have emphasized the importance of wearing masks in public places. This applies to all residents of the district, with specific emphasis on students and teachers to wear masks in schools and colleges. The Minister for Health, Veena George, has urged the public to be vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent the virus from spreading further.

The health authorities have identified 214 individuals who had close contact with the infected boy and placed them under surveillance. Of these, 60 individuals are considered high-risk and their serum samples will be tested for Nipah. The authorities are actively compiling a contact list to ensure comprehensive tracking and provide counseling to those who need it. The Health Director is expected to arrive in Malappuram on July 21 to assess the situation and coordinate further response efforts.

To further assist in the identification and monitoring of potential cases, the authorities published the Nipah patient’s route map. This map details the patient's movements and locations visited, including the Bright Tuition Centre, Dr. Vijayan’s Clinic, PKM Hospital, and Moulana Hospital. Individuals who were present at these locations during the patient's visit are urged to contact the control room.

The authorities have advised individuals experiencing symptoms like high fever, headache, cough, dizziness, myalgia, and vomiting to contact the Nipah control room immediately. Special care is advised for those exhibiting respiratory illnesses. The control room can be reached at 0483-2732010, 2732050, 2732060, 2732090.

The confirmed case of Nipah virus in Malappuram has triggered a heightened sense of urgency and concern. The district authorities are working diligently to contain the spread and mitigate any potential risks.
