The recent tragic landslip in Wayanad, Kerala, has prompted a swift response from neighboring Karnataka. Demonstrating solidarity and a commitment to assist in the rescue and relief operations, Karnataka's Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has dispatched two senior IAS officers to coordinate efforts with Kerala State authorities.
The officers, P.C. Jaffer and Dilish Sasi, have been tasked with facilitating communication and collaboration between the two states. Their contact information was readily provided in a media release by the Chief Minister, highlighting the urgency and importance of a coordinated response.
Beyond deploying personnel for coordination, Karnataka has also mobilized resources to directly support the rescue and relief efforts. The NDRF team in Bengaluru, along with teams from the Madras Engineer Group of the Army (MEG), were swiftly deployed to Wayanad. The MEG contingent, equipped with rescue and relief supplies, included an officer, two JCOs, and 70 personnel, travelling in 15 vehicles. Further reinforcements are expected, with two more officers, four JCOs, and 100 army personnel set to depart in 40 vehicles, equipped with necessary equipment.
The Karnataka Public Works Department has also played a crucial role, providing essential heavy machinery to clear debris from the landslip. Earth movers, cranes, and other heavy vehicles have been deployed to assist in the removal of debris, enabling access to affected areas and facilitating rescue and relief efforts.
The Chamarajanagar district administration has also established a 24/7 helpline to aid relatives and acquaintances of unorganized workers from Gundlupet taluk and surrounding areas who regularly travel to Wayanad for work. This helpline serves as a crucial communication channel, enabling families to stay informed about the well-being of their loved ones.
To ensure the safety of travelers and minimize disruptions, traffic on the Bengaluru-Wayanad National Highway 766, passing through Gundlupet, has been temporarily blocked. As an alternative, travelers are advised to utilize the Gundlupet-Bandipur-Gudalur route. Furthermore, the Mysuru district administration has prepared medical facilities at H.D. Kote taluk hospital and K.R. Hospital in Mysuru, ensuring the availability of necessary medical care.
Karnataka's swift and comprehensive response to the Wayanad landslip exemplifies the spirit of inter-state cooperation and unity in the face of adversity. The deployment of personnel, resources, and communication channels demonstrates a commitment to supporting Kerala in overcoming this challenging situation.
