India's Day 2 at Paris 2024: Medal, Wins, & Losses
  • India wins first medal at Paris 2024
  • Manu Bhaker wins bronze in shooting
  • Sindhu, Prannoy start badminton strong

India's journey at the Paris 2024 Olympics took a significant step forward on Day 2, with the nation securing its first medal of the Games. Shooter Manu Bhaker, who previously faced disappointment at Tokyo 2020, delivered a remarkable performance in the women's 10m air pistol event, claiming the bronze medal. This victory marked a historical moment as Bhaker became the first Indian woman to win a shooting medal at the Summer Games. The triumph showcased her resilience and determination, symbolizing India's growing strength in the shooting discipline.

While Bhaker's medal was the highlight, other Indian athletes also made their presence felt on the international stage. Fellow shooters Ramita Jindal (women's 10m air rifle) and Arjun Babuta (men's 10m air rifle) both secured spots in their respective finals, signifying a promising start for the Indian shooting contingent. In badminton, two-time medallist PV Sindhu and H.S. Prannoy began their singles campaigns with convincing wins, showcasing their experience and tactical prowess. Boxer Nikhat Zareen, making her Olympic debut, secured a victory in her opening bout, advancing to the women's 50kg round of 16. The bout against reigning 52kg world champion Wu Yu will be a formidable test, but Zareen's confidence and ability to adapt will be crucial.

The Indian contingent also had a notable showing in table tennis. While Sreeja Akula and Manika Batra progressed to the women's singles round of 32, Sharath Kamal and Harmeet Desai faced early elimination in the men's singles. Rower Balraj Panwar displayed remarkable tenacity, qualifying for the quarter-finals of the men's single sculls event. His performance underscored the rising standard of Indian rowing on the global stage. Unfortunately, India's campaigns in tennis and swimming concluded on a less favorable note. Rohan Bopanna-N Sriram Balaji in men's doubles and Sumit Nagal in men's singles were eliminated in their first round matches. Likewise, Srihari Nataraj and Dhinidhi Desinghu bowed out in their respective swimming heats. Despite the setbacks, these athletes have gained valuable experience that will serve them well in future competitions.
