The Lok Sabha, India's lower house of parliament, witnessed a heated exchange between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress over the issue of caste census and the preparation of the Union Budget. The debate was sparked by Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi's claim that there were no representatives from Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) among the officials involved in drafting the Budget.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman countered Gandhi's accusation by questioning the presence of SCs in the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation and Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust. She pointed out the lack of representation within these organizations, emphasizing the need for consistency in advocating for SC/ST rights.
Sitharaman further defended the tradition of the Budget halwa ceremony, which involves officials working in isolation for several days. She highlighted the importance of confidentiality and criticized Gandhi's casual approach to the matter. She also pointed to the historical context of reservation policies, citing instances where past Congress leaders had opposed or delayed affirmative action initiatives.
BJP leader and former Union Minister Anurag Thakur also joined the fray, targeting Gandhi's demand for a caste census. He questioned Gandhi's knowledge of Hindu mythology and the Mahabharata, accusing him of lacking understanding of the epic. Thakur went on to criticize Congress's past record, listing several instances of alleged wrongdoing and division within the country. He also compared Gandhi to the fictional character Abhimanyu, trapped in a 'chakravyuh' (a strategic formation) and criticized his political tactics.
Gandhi, in response, defended his stance, stating that he was waging a battle for the caste census and urging his party members to support its passage in the House. He dismissed Thakur's insults and continued to press for accountability and representation for marginalized communities.
The debate reflects the ongoing tension and political maneuvering between the ruling BJP and the opposition Congress in India. It highlights the sensitive issue of caste politics, reservation policies, and the role of the government in ensuring representation and inclusivity. The exchange also underscores the importance of the Union Budget and the political discourse surrounding its preparation and implementation.
