Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other leaders have expressed grief over the death of senior BJP leader and former Bihar deputy chief minister Sushil Kumar Modi.

Sushil Modi, 72, died this evening after a battle with cancer. He was a prominent figure in Bihar politics for decades and was known for his dedication to the state.

PM Modi said he was "saddened" by the death of his "valuable colleague in the party and my friend for decades." He credited Modi with the "rise and success of BJP in Bihar."

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said he had lost a "true friend and a hard-working politician." He said Modi had worked with him for a long time as deputy chief minister and that he had a personal relationship with him.

Leader of the Opposition in Bihar and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav remembered Modi as a "struggling and hardworking leader."

BJP chief JP Nadda and Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also paid their respects. Nadda said Modi's "entire life was dedicated to Bihar."

West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee tweeted that she was "sorry to hear about the sad demise of Shri Sushil Kumar Modi." She said her "thoughts and prayers are with his family & friends."

Sushil Modi was a respected and admired figure in Bihar politics. He will be remembered for his dedication to the state and his commitment to public service.
