Stones were thrown at BJP candidate Dilip Ghosh's convoy in the Bardhaman-Durgapur seat in West Bengal during the fourth phase of Lok Sabha polls, resulting in injuries to a security personnel and damage to some cars.
Visuals captured by NDTV showed paramilitary personnel struggling to control the crowd as stones were hurled at Mr Ghosh's car. A security personnel sustained a head injury and sought refuge in NDTV's vehicle, while an NDTV cameraperson was hit on the leg by a stone.
The incident occurred amid allegations of violence and EVM malfunctions in several constituencies, with different political parties filing over 1,088 complaints. Workers of the ruling Trinamool Congress and the BJP clashed in some areas, leading to protests and disruptions.
Earlier in the day, Dilip Ghosh accused Trinamool Congress of preventing polling agents from entering booths and intimidating voters. Trinamool, in turn, has accused Ghosh of trying to create a negative atmosphere due to fears of defeat.
Clashes were also reported in Birbhum and Krishnanagar constituencies, where BJP workers clashed with Trinamool supporters. BJP candidate Amrita Roy accompanied two injured supporters to the police station, while a CPM worker was injured in a scuffle in Tehatta.
The unruly scenes were a far cry from the earlier show of unity between Ghosh and his main opponent, Kirti Azad, who hugged each other during a visit to a poll booth. However, the situation deteriorated as the day progressed, highlighting the tensions and challenges faced during the ongoing elections in West Bengal.
