Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico was wounded in a shooting on Wednesday afternoon and taken to the hospital.

The incident occurred outside the House of Culture in the town of Handlova, where Fico was meeting with supporters.

According to reports on TA3, a Slovakian TV station, Fico was hit in the stomach after four shots were fired.

A suspect has been detained and the police have sealed off the scene.

Deputy speaker of parliament Lubos Blaha confirmed the incident during a session of Parliament and adjourned it until further notice.

President Zuzana Caputova condemned the attack, calling it "brutal and ruthless".

She wished Fico a speedy recovery and expressed her shock at the incident.
