Comedian Shyam Rangeela's nomination from the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat has been rejected by the Election Commission of India. Rangeela had filed his nomination on May 14 as an Independent candidate against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. However, the Election Commission's website showed that his nomination was rejected a day later.
Rangeela had shot to fame for mimicking Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Earlier this month, he had announced that he will contest the Lok Sabha elections against PM Modi in Varanasi. He had alleged obstructions in filing nomination and had tweeted that proposers and the form were ready, but no one was ready to accept it. He later confirmed that he had managed to file the nomination papers by "fulfilling all the requirements as per the rules".
The Varanasi constituency in Uttar Pradesh will go to polls in the seventh and last phase of polling on June 1. The counting of votes for the Lok Sabha election will be on June 4.
