Extremely heavy rainfall likely over four districts in Kerala till Wednesday

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning that extremely heavy rainfall is likely to occur over parts of Kerala state till Wednesday. Pathnamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, and Idukki districts have been placed on red alert till Tuesday due to the possibility of receiving extremely heavy rainfall, defined as more than 20 centimeters of rainfall within a 24-hour period. The IMD has also issued an orange alert for these four districts for Wednesday, indicating that extremely heavy rainfall is still possible. The alert status for Wednesday may be revised based on further weather developments.

Night travel ban in Idukki

Considering the severe weather alerts, the Idukki district administration has implemented a ban on night-time travel in the hilly regions of the district. This measure has been taken to ensure the safety of travelers during the heavy rainfall conditions.

Heavy rainfall likely over Kerala till at least Thursday

As per an update issued by the IMD on Sunday at 4 p.m., heavy rainfall is expected to continue over Kerala till at least Thursday. Most of the other central and southern Kerala districts have been placed on orange alert for isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall till Thursday. The northern districts of the state are on yellow alert for isolated heavy rainfall.

A low-pressure area over southwest Bay of Bengal

A low-pressure area is likely to form over the southwest Bay of Bengal on Wednesday. This low-pressure area is expected to intensify into a depression over the central parts of the Bay of Bengal around Friday, May 24th. The formation of this depression could potentially lead to further rainfall in the region.

Monsoon advances

Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon has advanced into some parts of the Maldives, parts of the Bay of Bengal, Nicobar Islands, and the South Andaman Sea, according to the IMD. A cyclonic circulation is present over south interior Tamil Nadu and its vicinity. Another cyclonic circulation is located over central Maharashtra and its surrounding areas. A trough extends from above this cyclonic circulation towards south Tamil Nadu across Karnataka.

Squally weather along Kerala coast

Squally weather conditions are likely to prevail along and off the Kerala coast till Thursday. Fishermen have been advised not to venture out to sea during this period for their safety.
