The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly considering Gautam Gambhir as a potential candidate for the role of India's head coach.
Gambhir, 42, has no prior experience of coaching at international or domestic level, but he has been in charge of the coaching staff at two IPL franchises.
He was the mentor at Lucknow Super Giants in IPL 2022 and 2023, where the team qualified for the playoffs in both seasons.
Gambhir then joined KKR for the 2024 season, where the team finished the league stage on top of the points table.
Gambhir's move to KKR for IPL 2024 was unexpected, but it is learned that he was persuaded to become the team's mentor by the franchise's principal owner, Shah Rukh Khan.
The BCCI is reportedly impressed by Gambhir's success as a mentor in the IPL, and they believe that he has the potential to be a successful head coach for India.
Gambhir is a former India cricketer who played 58 Tests, 147 ODIs, and 37 T20Is for his country.
He was a member of the India team that won the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 Cricket World Cup.
After retiring from playing, Gambhir entered politics and was elected as a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha elections in 2019.
He is currently serving as the Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports in the Government of India.
