SRH Retains Head and Reddy Ahead of IPL Auction
  • SRH retains Travis Head and Nitish Reddy for INR 14 and 6 crore respectively.
  • The team now has 5 retained capped players, leaving them with INR 75 crore in purse.
  • Head's performance in 2024 IPL and proven record on big occasions likely led to his retention.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) franchise has confirmed the retention of Travis Head and Nitish Kumar Reddy as their final two capped players ahead of the 2025 IPL auction. Head is expected to be retained for a hefty INR 14 crore, while Reddy's retention comes at INR 6 crore. With these additions, SRH completes their quota of five capped retained players before the auction, solidifying the core group that propelled them to the IPL 2024 final. This retention strategy leaves the franchise with INR 75 crore remaining from their initial purse of INR 120 crore.

Prior to these retentions, SRH had already secured the services of Heinrich Klaasen (INR 23 crore), Pat Cummins (INR 18 crore), and Abhishek Sharma (INR 14 crore). The team's right-to-match card can now only be used to buy back a single uncapped player during the auction. The October 31st deadline for franchises to submit their retained player lists to the IPL has passed, marking a significant step towards the upcoming mega auction.

The IPL rules allow franchises to retain up to six players before the mega auction, with a maximum of five capped internationals and two uncapped players permitted. While the IPL mandates minimum deductions from the auction purse for each retained player – INR 18 crore for the first, INR 14 crore for the second, INR 11 crore for the third, INR 18 crore for the fourth, and INR 14 crore for the fifth – franchises retain the freedom to offer their retained players a higher compensation. This strategy is evident in the case of Klaasen, who received INR 5 crore more than the IPL's prescribed slab for the first retained player.

The retention of Head is particularly notable, given his breakthrough season with SRH in 2024. His aggressive batting style, evident in his 567 runs at a phenomenal strike rate of 191.55, solidified his position as a key asset for the team. Head's exceptional performance has also earned him recognition as the second T20 batter in history to score 1000-plus runs at a strike rate exceeding 175 and an average exceeding 40 in a single year. Although he didn't make a substantial impact in the IPL final against Kolkata Knight Riders, Head boasts a solid track record of performing on crucial occasions. Notably, he scored centuries against India in both the World Test Championship final and the ODI World Cup final in 2023, highlighting his ability to deliver under pressure. His 137-run innings in the ODI World Cup final in Ahmedabad was instrumental in SRH securing his services for INR 6.8 crore at the IPL 2024 auction. This time, despite the significant increase in his price tag, Head's market value suggests he would have attracted even higher bids had he been available in the auction.

As SRH moves forward with its retained core, Cummins, who will continue as captain, leads the team alongside coaching staff led by Daniel Vettori. The team's focus will be on maximizing its remaining purse and strategically selecting players through the auction to bolster the team's strength and firepower for the upcoming season.
