In response to a recent stampede at Bandra Terminus, Central Railway (CR) has implemented temporary restrictions on the sale of platform tickets at major stations. This measure aims to mitigate the anticipated influx of passengers during the upcoming Diwali and Chhath Puja festivities. The decision follows an incident on October 27, 2024, where nine individuals were injured while attempting to board the Bandra Terminus-Gorakhpur Antyodaya Express at Bandra Terminus. The incident occurred around 2:45 am as the train was entering platform number 1 from the yard, prior to its scheduled departure at 5:10 am. Videos documenting the chaotic scene quickly spread on social media, highlighting the safety concerns associated with overcrowding at major railway stations.
The platform ticket restrictions will be in effect at Chhatrapati Shivjai Maharaj Terminus, Dadar, Kurla LTT, Thane, Kalyan, Pune, and Nagpur stations, beginning immediately. These restrictions will remain in place until November 8, coinciding with the duration of the festive season. CR officials emphasize that this temporary measure is intended to manage the anticipated surge in passengers and ensure a smooth flow of individuals within station premises. They have also acknowledged that senior citizens and individuals with medical needs will be exempt from these restrictions. Passengers are urged to adhere to the new regulations to facilitate a safe and efficient travel experience during the festive period.
The stampede at Bandra Terminus serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers associated with overcrowding at railway stations. While the implementation of platform ticket restrictions is a proactive step towards mitigating these risks, it remains crucial for railway authorities to implement comprehensive safety protocols to prevent such incidents from recurring. This includes investing in infrastructure upgrades, enhancing crowd management strategies, and implementing robust security measures to ensure the well-being of passengers.
