  • Ten arrested in Mumbai road rage incident.
  • Victim, Akash Maeen, was beaten to death.
  • Incident sparked by altercation with auto driver.

A horrific incident of road rage in Mumbai has resulted in the arrest of 10 individuals, highlighting the escalating issue of violence on Indian roads. The incident began with a seemingly minor dispute between a motorcyclist, Akash Maeen, and an auto-rickshaw driver, Avinash Kadam, in Malad East. The altercation escalated quickly, leading to a fatal assault on Maeen. The details of the incident paint a disturbing picture of the mob mentality that can erupt in such situations.

According to reports, Maeen, a resident of Hyderabad, was visiting his parents in Mumbai during the Navratri festival. On Saturday, he and his wife were returning from an automobile showroom on their bike when Kadam overtook them, nearly colliding with their vehicle. This triggered a heated exchange of words between the two men. As a crowd began to gather, Maeen's wife, understandably worried, called her mother-in-law, Deepali, who happened to be an MNS functionary. Deepali and her husband, Dattatreya, rushed to the scene, only to find their son already under attack.

By the time Maeen's parents arrived, a group of 9-10 men, known to Kadam, had surrounded him. The accused, allegedly fueled by the initial altercation, unleashed a brutal assault on Maeen, raining blows and kicks upon him. The FIR filed in the case states that Maeen was also struck with stones. In a desperate attempt to defend himself, Maeen fought back, injuring two of the attackers. However, he was eventually overpowered and fell to the ground. Deepali, in an act of bravery, threw herself over her son to shield him, but the assailants continued their brutal attack, even targeting Maeen's parents.

The police investigation revealed that all 10 accused reside in Malad East, with one having a prior criminal record involving rape. Despite the heinous nature of the crime, police described some of the accused as individuals with seemingly ordinary jobs – one worked in loan recovery for a bank, another was a photographer, and most held positions in private companies. They were reportedly volunteering at a Navratri mandal nearby when they witnessed the altercation between Maeen and Kadam and rushed to Kadam's aid. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of mob mentality and the devastating consequences of uncontrolled anger on our roads.

The case has sent shockwaves through the city, sparking discussions about the escalating issue of road rage and the need for greater safety measures on the roads. The incident also raises concerns about the role of bystanders and the potential for mob mentality to escalate situations that might otherwise be resolved peacefully. The arrest of all 10 accused brings a sense of justice to Maeen's family, but it also serves as a stark reminder of the need for greater awareness and intervention to prevent such tragic incidents from occurring in the future.
