Kannada Actor Granted Bail for Surgery After 4 Months
  • Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa granted bail
  • Thoogudeepa to undergo surgery for backache
  • Bail granted on medical grounds for six weeks

Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa, currently incarcerated for his alleged involvement in the murder of a fan, has been granted interim bail by the Karnataka High Court on medical grounds. Thoogudeepa, who has been in prison for over four months since his arrest on June 11, will be released to undergo surgery for backache, as recommended by a specialist.

The high court's decision was based on a medical report submitted by Thoogudeepa's counsel, highlighting the actor's need for specialized treatment outside of prison. Justice S Vishwajith Shetty granted the interim bail for six weeks, stipulating several conditions, including the surrender of Thoogudeepa's passport and his adherence to a strict regimen upon release.

The court's order underscores the principle of humane treatment, recognizing that even individuals accused of crimes have a right to adequate medical care. The judges emphasized that timely medical intervention is crucial to prevent potential risks to the accused's health and well-being, recognizing the seriousness of Thoogudeepa's medical condition.

Thoogudeepa's bail comes after a Bengaluru sessions court had previously rejected his bail plea, along with those of his co-accused, in connection with the murder of Renukaswamy. The police investigation, based on call detail records and DNA evidence, concluded that Renukaswamy, a resident of Chitradurga, was killed after allegedly being beaten up by Thoogudeepa's associates. The actor's presence at the crime scene has been established, and his associates are also implicated in the murder.

The case has garnered considerable media attention, with the murder investigation revealing a series of disturbing events. Renukaswamy was accused of relentlessly stalking and harassing Pavitra Gowda, Thoogudeepa's friend, through social media platforms. His death, subsequently determined to be a result of a brutal assault, has sparked widespread controversy and condemnation.

Thoogudeepa's release on medical grounds has raised questions about the balance between the right to medical care and the severity of the charges against him. While the court acknowledged the need for specialized treatment, the decision to grant bail to someone accused of a serious crime is sure to draw scrutiny. The case is expected to continue, with Thoogudeepa's return to prison after the completion of his surgery remaining a possibility.
