Diwali, the festival of lights, is a significant celebration for Hindus across the globe. In the United States, this joyous occasion is observed with enthusiasm in community centers, temples, and homes. Diwali signifies the triumph of good over evil, commemorating the return of Lord Rama and Mata Sita to Ayodhya after defeating the demon king Ravana. It also marks the end of their 14-year exile. The festival falls on the 15th day of the month of Kartik according to the Hindu lunisolar calendar, typically occurring in October or November. This year, Diwali will be celebrated on Thursday, October 31, 2024.
One of the most important aspects of Diwali is the worship of Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity. Many Hindus observe a fast throughout the day, concluding it after Lakshmi Puja, which is performed in homes and offices. Homes are adorned with decorations like marigold flowers, mango and banana leaves, and other festive embellishments. According to Drik Panchang, keeping Mangalik Kalash covered with unpeeled coconuts on either side of the main entrance is considered auspicious. For Lakshmi Puja, idols of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha are placed on a red cloth, cleaned meticulously, and adorned with silk clothes and jewelry. A white cloth is placed on a raised platform at the left side for installing Navgraha gods. The puja samagri includes akshat (uncooked rice), silver coins, kalash, mango leaves, sweets, fruits, kumkum (vermilion powder), incense sticks, diya (oil lamps), and supari (areca nut). Lakshmi Puja should be performed according to the auspicious timings suggested by the panchang.
Kali Puja, also known as Shyama Puja, is another important ritual observed during Diwali, particularly by people from West Bengal, Orissa, and Assam. While Diwali Puja and Kali Puja sometimes fall on the same day, the latter might occur one day before. This year, Kali Puja coincides with Diwali Puja. According to Drik Panchang, the day when Amavasya (new moon) prevails during midnight is considered auspicious for Kali Puja. On the other hand, Lakshmi Puja is performed on the day when Amavasya prevails during Pradosh (evening twilight).
