Air India Flights Targeted by Hoax Bomb Threats
  • 32 Air India flights received bomb threats.
  • Threats deemed hoaxes, flights operated normally.
  • NIA investigates recent rise in airline threats.

The recent wave of bomb threats directed at commercial airlines and various establishments across India continues unabated, with 32 Air India flights falling victim to fresh threats on Tuesday. This incident follows a similar pattern observed the previous day when seven flights operated by Indian carriers to and from Kolkata received bomb threat messages disseminated through social media posts. Despite the unsettling nature of these threats, they were ultimately determined to be hoaxes, allowing flights to proceed as scheduled.

The persistent occurrence of these threats has prompted a heightened security response from authorities. The National Investigation Agency (NIA), recognizing the gravity of the situation, has intensified its security efforts nationwide. The surge in airline threat calls, exceeding 400 in the past two weeks alone, has understandably raised concerns about passenger safety and national security. To address this growing challenge, the NIA's cyber wing has initiated a comprehensive analysis of these foreign threat calls, aiming to unravel the motives behind them and determine their authenticity.

In response to the escalating number of hoax threat calls, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) issued an advisory last week to all social media platforms. This advisory underscores the importance of complying with the Information Technology (IT) Rules and Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) regulations, urging platforms to take swift action to remove bomb threat posts. Failure to do so, the advisory warns, could lead to legal consequences. This directive reflects the government's commitment to curbing the spread of misinformation and ensuring the safety of citizens.
