Siddique Seeks Bail in Supreme Court for Sexual Harassment Case
  • Malayalam actor Siddique seeks bail in Supreme Court
  • He faces sexual harassment allegations from an actress
  • The case stems from the Justice Hema Committee report

The Malayalam film industry is currently grappling with a wave of sexual harassment allegations, with prominent figures facing scrutiny and legal action. Actor Siddique, known for his contributions to Malayalam cinema, is seeking anticipatory bail in the Supreme Court following accusations of sexual harassment. This development comes after the Kerala High Court rejected his previous anticipatory bail petition. The accusations against Siddique stem from a complaint filed by an actress in August this year, following the release of the Justice Hema Committee report which exposed widespread sexual harassment and exploitation within the industry.

The actress accused Siddique under sections 376 (rape) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). However, Siddique has vehemently denied these allegations. The Justice Hema Committee report, published in August, highlighted the deeply rooted culture of harassment and control within the Malayalam film industry. The report revealed that a small group of powerful male figures, including producers, directors, and actors, wield significant influence and exert control over the industry, creating an environment conducive to abuse.

The release of the report triggered a #MeToo movement within the Malayalam film industry, leading to a series of accusations against prominent individuals, including directors like Ranjith and actors like Mukesh, Siddique, and others. In response to the allegations, Siddique resigned from his position as general secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artistes (AMMA) along with the entire executive committee. The ongoing legal proceedings against Siddique, coupled with the broader #MeToo movement in the Malayalam film industry, highlight the urgent need for systemic change to address the pervasive culture of harassment and ensure a safer environment for women working in the industry.
