The escalating violence in Manipur continues to grip the state, with student protests taking center stage in the latest demonstration against the unrest. Thousands of students from Imphal West, Kakching, and Thoubal districts took to the streets on Monday, expressing their outrage over the recent outbreak of violence that has left nine people dead and over a dozen injured. The protests, characterized by massive rallies and chants of anger, highlighted the deep-seated grievances and anxieties of the students in the wake of the escalating conflict.
The protests reached a boiling point outside the heavily-guarded Raj Bhawan, the Governor's residence, where protestors resorted to stone-pelting. Videos circulating on social media captured the tense confrontation, showing protestors hurling stones at the building and security personnel attempting to disperse them with force. This incident, following scuffles between the protestors and security personnel, underscores the volatile situation in the state, where frustrations are running high and the demand for action is growing louder by the day.
The protestors, many of whom were wearing their school uniforms despite schools being closed on the day by government order, made specific demands for accountability and change. They called for the resignation of Kuldiep Singh, the state's security advisor, Rajiv Singh, the Director General of Police, and 50 MLAs, claiming their resignation was necessary on “moral grounds.” The protests also targeted the paramilitary forces, demanding that they leave the state, which the protestors claim has remained “mute spectators” to the violence. The protestors expressed deep concerns over recent incidents of rocket and drone bombing attacks, as well as killings and arson, accusing the central and state governments of failing to effectively contain the situation and restore peace.
The protests serve as a stark reminder of the fragile peace in Manipur and the deep divisions within the state. The ongoing violence, fuelled by ethnic tensions, has created a climate of fear and uncertainty, leaving many residents feeling vulnerable and disillusioned.
