The brutal murder of a young medical professional in Kolkata has sparked widespread outrage and continuous protests, with the city's medical community demanding justice for the victim. On Saturday, members of the West Bengal Service Doctors Forum organized a rally from Sealdah station to Raj Bhavan, the governor's residence, to express their anger and demand swift action from authorities.
The rally, which saw around 200 doctors and nursing staff participating, was halted near Raj Bhavan due to prohibitory orders in place. A five-member delegation was allowed to enter the building to submit a memorandum to the governor, seeking his intervention in expediting the investigation. However, the governor was not present, and the memorandum was accepted by his office.
The forum spokesperson emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating that the entire state and country demand the identification and punishment of the perpetrators. They urged the governor, as the constitutional head of the state, to use his authority to accelerate the probe. The incident has shaken the medical community, highlighting the vulnerability of healthcare workers and the need for stricter safety measures.
In another demonstration of solidarity with the victim, painters like Sanatan Dinda gathered at Shyambazar, close to the R G Kar hospital where the medic's body was found on August 9th, to create sketches in watercolor and oil on canvas. Dinda expressed the collective grief and anger, emphasizing their duty to protect all women and ensure justice for the victim. The painting workshop was held at the 'dharna manch' of DYFI and SFI, the youth and student organizations of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), in north Kolkata.
The tragic incident has triggered nationwide outrage and protests, with the Calcutta High Court directing the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the investigation. The CBI's involvement signifies the seriousness of the crime and the need for a thorough and impartial investigation. The ongoing protests and demands for justice reflect the public's deep concern about the safety of women and the need for effective law enforcement to ensure accountability and prevent such tragedies in the future.
