The Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B) witnessed a significant surge in internship opportunities for its students in 2024, marking the highest number in the past five years. A total of 1,267 internship offers were extended, representing a 13% increase compared to the previous year's count of 1,104. This positive trend underlines the growing demand for IIT-B graduates in the industry.
The internship offers were predominantly from companies, with a smaller number stemming from the university itself. The strong demand for students from departments such as computer science, chemical engineering, civil engineering, and mechanical engineering was particularly notable. While a slight decrease in MSc internships was observed, there was an increase in design internships, reflecting shifts in industry demands.
Internships play a pivotal role in students' career trajectories, as they often lead to full-time employment offers known as pre-placement offers (PPOs). The data clearly suggests that the internship experience during the third year of study significantly influences a student's career path. Of the total student population, 430 students opted for core internships related to their respective departments, while 740 pursued non-core internships in other companies.
The duration of the internships also varied, with summer internships typically starting in May and continuing till mid-July, while winter internships take place in December. The higher number of summer internships offered (1,178) compared to winter internships (89) can be attributed to the longer duration available during the summer months.
The internship program at IIT-B provides students with valuable opportunities to gain industrial exposure and enhance their skill sets in their chosen fields. In recent years, the institute has implemented a credit-based internship program, allowing students to leverage their internship performance towards fulfilling academic credit requirements. This further emphasizes the importance of internships in the overall educational experience at IIT-B.
