The recent placement data for the Post Graduate Programme for Executives (PGPX) at the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A) reveals a mixed picture for the graduating class of 2024. While the median earning potential for the program saw a positive increase, the highest maximum earning potential (MEP) witnessed a six-year low, dropping to ₹54.8 lakh per annum compared to ₹1.08 crore last year.
This decline in the highest MEP highlights the evolving dynamics of the job market and the competitiveness among graduates. However, it's essential to consider that the median MEP reflects the general salary trends and has shown a steady upward trajectory, rising from ₹33 lakh in 2023 to ₹35 lakh in 2024. This indicates that a significant portion of the graduating class still secured attractive employment opportunities.
The placement data also reveals the strong industry preference for IIM-A's PGPX graduates. Consulting emerged as the leading sector, accounting for 26 offers, followed by IT consulting with 16 offers. Banking and financial services, and IT solutions secured 13 and 12 offers respectively, while the pharmaceutical/healthcare sector and energy sector witnessed an increase in placements.
Professor Vishwanath Pingali, chairperson of the placement committee, highlighted the emerging trends in the job market, emphasizing the growth of the healthcare and pharmaceuticals, and energy sectors, particularly in areas like renewable energy and electric vehicles (EVs). This indicates that IIM-A's PGPX graduates are equipped with the skills and knowledge to contribute to these rapidly developing industries.
Despite the lower highest MEP, the overall placement statistics suggest a strong demand for IIM-A's PGPX graduates. The program continues to attract top recruiters across various sectors, and the steady increase in the median earning potential indicates a positive trend for the majority of the graduating class. Furthermore, the growing focus on emerging sectors such as healthcare and energy suggests that IIM-A's PGPX graduates are well-positioned to succeed in a rapidly evolving job market.
