The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of extremely heavy rainfall in Gujarat, Saurashtra, and Kutch for Tuesday, September 3. The prediction also extends to several other states, including Punjab, Telangana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and northeastern states like Assam, Meghalaya, and Manipur. A well-marked low-pressure area over the northwest Arabian Sea is currently positioned over the northwest and adjoining west central Arabian Sea, with a projected south-south-westward movement and gradual weakening into a low-pressure area within the next 12 hours.
Several parts of Gujarat experienced heavy rain on Monday, with Bharuch city receiving 120 millimeters between 4 pm and 6 pm. The IMD predicts widespread rainfall in the state throughout this week. Last week, the state endured extremely heavy rains that resulted in widespread flooding. Cyclone 'Asna', which formed off the coast of Kutch on Friday, has transformed into a depression and moved further south-southwestwards in the Arabian Sea on Monday. The state government has issued a high alert for 132 reservoirs, with 10 rivers currently overflowing.
The torrential downpour in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh has had a devastating impact, claiming 31 lives and disrupting transportation links. Roads and rail tracks have been battered, thousands of acres of agricultural crops submerged, and rescue agencies are actively involved in rescue and rehabilitation efforts. Telangana reported 16 fatalities, while Andhra Pradesh, particularly hard-hit by the rain fury, experienced 15 deaths. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has instructed all state officials to prioritize relief efforts and aid flood victims following the unprecedented rainfall and flooding, particularly in Vijayawada. He is conducting surprise inspections in affected areas and seeking direct feedback from residents via the Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS).
