Ex-RG Kar Principal Sent to Judicial Custody in Financial Scam
  • Ex-RG Kar principal Sandip Ghosh and three aides sent to judicial custody.
  • Ghosh and associates accused of financial irregularities at the hospital.
  • CBI investigation revealed criminal nexus causing financial loss to government.

The case of former RG Kar Medical College principal Sandip Ghosh and his alleged involvement in a financial scam has taken another turn as he and three of his aides have been sent to judicial custody until September 23. This decision comes as a result of an ongoing investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into alleged financial irregularities at the state-run hospital. The case has gained significant attention due to the tragic incident of a postgraduate trainee doctor who was raped and murdered at the hospital on August 9, 2023.

The CBI's investigation has uncovered a complex network of alleged criminal activity, with evidence suggesting that Ghosh, along with his co-accused, engaged in a scheme to exploit the hospital's resources for personal gain. Two vendors, who were known to Ghosh since his time at Murshidabad Medical College and Hospital, were allegedly granted contracts at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital due to their close relationship with him. Ghosh brought these vendors to Kolkata when he became the principal of RG Kar hospital, and they were given preferential treatment for supplying materials to the hospital.

This alleged preferential treatment is believed to have resulted in substantial financial loss to the government. According to the CBI, Ghosh and his co-accused exploited their positions to benefit financially, causing harm to the public institution. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has also joined the investigation, conducting searches at multiple locations associated with Ghosh, including his residence, farmhouse, and the homes of his relatives and associates. These searches were aimed at uncovering further evidence related to the alleged financial irregularities during Ghosh's tenure at the hospital.

The case highlights the vulnerability of public institutions to corruption and the potential consequences for both individuals and the public good. The legal proceedings against Ghosh and his associates are expected to continue as the CBI continues its investigation to establish the full extent of the alleged financial wrongdoing. The outcome of this case will have implications not only for the medical community but also for the public's trust in the integrity of public institutions.
