Centre vs West Bengal over CISF at RG Kar Hospital
  • Centre moved Supreme Court over CISF deployment
  • West Bengal government accused of non-cooperation
  • Supreme Court ordered CISF deployment after mob attack

The Centre has taken the West Bengal government to the Supreme Court over the deployment of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The Centre alleges that the CISF personnel are facing difficulties in performing their duties due to the lack of accommodation, security gadgets, and transportation. The Centre further describes the alleged non-cooperation of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government as a symptom of a broader systemic issue.

This legal action stems from a tragic incident that occurred on August 14-15, when a mob attacked the RG Kar Hospital. The attack followed the rape and murder of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor on August 9. The mob vandalized the emergency department, nursing station, and medicine store, damaged CCTV cameras, and ransacked a stage where junior doctors were protesting. The Supreme Court, in response to the violence and the need to ensure security for the hospital and its staff, ordered the deployment of CISF personnel on August 20.

The Centre, through its plea, is demanding that the West Bengal government fully cooperate with the CISF and adhere to the Supreme Court's order. Failure to do so, the Centre warns, could lead to contempt proceedings. The situation highlights a complex interplay between law enforcement, security measures, and the response of the state government to a serious crime and its aftermath. It underscores the importance of ensuring the safety and security of healthcare facilities and their personnel, particularly in the face of violence and unrest.
