Kar Medical College and Hospital, where a trainee doctor was found raped and murdered on August 9. The accused, Sanjoy Roy, was apprehended by Kolkata police and remains the sole suspect in the case. The court's review of a confidential status report submitted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) raised questions about the completeness of the evidence provided by the West Bengal police. The court emphasized its desire for the CBI to conduct a thorough investigation, granting the agency a week to collect additional leads and file another status report.
The court's concern extended to the preservation of the victim's privacy and dignity. An order was issued for the immediate removal of any photographs of the victim's body from social media. The court also noted a significant delay in the registration of the FIR, highlighting a 14-hour lapse between the incident and the official report. The Bench further examined the contents of the status report, revealing insights into the victim's final hours, including the timing of her death and her last meal.
The Solicitor General, representing the CBI, expressed concerns regarding the collection of forensic evidence from the victim's body. He proposed sending the evidence to AIIMS or other Central Forensic Science Laboratories for testing. The court inquired about a mandatory form that should have been filled out and sent with the body for post-mortem. The judge emphasized the document's importance due to its inclusion of a section listing seized items from the crime scene. The state of West Bengal was ordered to produce this crucial document during the next hearing, as it was not initially provided to the CBI. The missing document highlights potential shortcomings in the investigation process.
