Bombay HC Delays Release of Kangana Ranaut's 'Emergency'
  • Bombay HC refused to grant immediate relief to producers of 'Emergency' film
  • The film's release is delayed due to objections from Sikh groups
  • CBFC must consider objections before granting a certificate

The Bombay High Court (HC) has issued a ruling that will delay the release of the film 'Emergency', starring Kangana Ranaut. The court's decision stems from protests by Sikh groups concerning the portrayal of their community in the film. Sikh groups have expressed concerns about the film's depiction, prompting them to seek intervention from the Madhya Pradesh High Court. This intervention led to an order from the MP HC on September 3rd, requiring the Sikh groups to submit their objections to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) within a three-day timeframe. The CBFC was then instructed to promptly assess these representations.

The Bombay HC, recognizing the binding nature of the MP HC order, declared that it could not, at this stage, mandate the CBFC to issue a release certificate for 'Emergency' without considering the objections raised. The court highlighted the importance of upholding judicial decorum, emphasizing that it would be inappropriate to direct the CBFC to disregard the existing order. The bench's decision emphasizes the need for thorough examination of the concerns raised before granting a release certificate.

The Bombay HC has ordered the CBFC to meticulously review the objections and make a decision on or before September 18th. This decision underscores the complexity surrounding the film's release and the importance of addressing the concerns voiced by the Sikh groups. While the Bombay HC's ruling might lead to a temporary delay in the film's release, it reflects a commitment to ensuring a fair and transparent process, acknowledging the right of communities to express concerns about portrayals in films. The next hearing on the matter is scheduled for September 19th.
