A recent car accident in Nagpur involving the son of a prominent BJP leader has sparked controversy and allegations of political pressure. The incident occurred on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday when Sanket Bawankule, the son of Maharashtra Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule, lost control of his Audi car and collided with another vehicle and some two-wheelers in the Ramdaspeth area.
The Sitabuldi police station has registered a case and is currently investigating the accident. While initial reports suggested that Sanket Bawankule was driving the car, Deputy Commissioner of Police Rahul Madane later confirmed that he was not behind the wheel. Arjun Haware, the driver of the car, was arrested but later granted bail. Blood samples from both Sanket Bawankule and Arjun Haware were collected and sent for analysis.
The accident has drawn significant attention due to the political affiliations of the individuals involved. Opposition parties have accused the ruling BJP of attempting to shield Sanket Bawankule and have raised concerns about possible political interference in the investigation. Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Raut claimed that Sanket Bawankule was initially driving the car but exchanged seats with his driver after the crash, questioning the removal of the car's number plates. State Congress chief spokesperson Atul Londhe echoed these concerns, alleging that Sanket Bawankule was driving under the influence of alcohol and had hit multiple vehicles without facing any immediate action. He questioned the police's inaction and speculated about potential pressure being exerted on them.
Chandrashekhar Bawankule, the father of the accused, has publicly stated that he expects a fair and impartial investigation. He emphasized that the law should be applied equally to everyone and that those found guilty should face appropriate consequences. The incident highlights the sensitive nature of political controversies, particularly when they involve accidents and allegations of favoritism. It remains to be seen how the investigation unfolds and whether any charges will be filed against those involved in the accident.
