The news of a large asteroid, dubbed 'God of Chaos,' approaching Earth has sparked global concern and prompted international collaboration in space exploration. The asteroid, known as Apophis, is of particular interest to scientists and space agencies due to its potential for a close encounter with our planet. While the immediate threat of a collision seems unlikely, the possibility of a future impact remains a concern. As a result, NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) are actively pursuing missions to study Apophis further and better understand its trajectory and potential impact on Earth.
NASA has plans to utilize its OSIRIS-REx mission, which was initially designed to collect samples from asteroid Bennu, to redirect its course towards Apophis. This mission, if successful, would provide invaluable data about the asteroid's composition, structure, and behavior. This information will be crucial for determining the potential risk posed by Apophis and developing effective mitigation strategies. In addition to NASA's efforts, the ESA is also preparing a mission specifically focused on Apophis, known as the Rapid Apophis Mission for Security and Safety (RAMSES). This mission is currently slated for launch in 2028 and aims to conduct a detailed reconnaissance of the asteroid. The mission objectives include mapping the asteroid's surface, determining its mass and rotation rate, and analyzing its potential for fragmentation.
India's role in this global effort is not to be overlooked. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has expressed interest in collaborating with NASA and ESA on these missions. ISRO's expertise in space exploration and its previous successful missions, such as the Chandrayaan missions to the Moon and the Mangalyaan mission to Mars, make it a valuable partner in this international endeavor. India's potential participation in the Apophis missions could involve contributing technology, resources, and scientific expertise. By working together, these global space agencies aim to understand the potential threat posed by Apophis and develop effective countermeasures to ensure the safety of our planet.
