Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro Launched with German Support
  • New metro line links Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.
  • German loan and technology support the project.
  • Line aims for sustainable and efficient transport.

The inauguration of the new metro line connecting Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar marks a significant step towards sustainable urban transportation in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, alongside German Development Minister Svenja Schulze, presided over the launch, highlighting the collaborative effort between India and Germany in this project. The 600-million-euro line, partly funded by a German development loan, showcases the commitment to building environmentally friendly infrastructure that benefits both the environment and the people.

The metro line's significance lies in its ability to address the growing traffic congestion and pollution challenges faced by Ahmedabad, a rapidly expanding city. With the influx of commuters traveling to Gandhinagar's thriving technology sector, existing infrastructure struggled to cope. The new metro line provides a climate-friendly alternative, offering a safe and efficient transit option for the city's residents. This initiative is expected to serve 120,000 passengers daily, with projections indicating an increase to 330,000 over the next 30 years.

Beyond its transport benefits, the metro line also promotes social equity and inclusion. It offers a reliable and secure mode of transport for commuters from less affluent areas and women, further enhancing their mobility. The project's success is a testament to the fruitful partnership between India and Germany. The German Development Ministry's 100 million euro loan, facilitated through KfW Development Bank, underscores the commitment to sustainable infrastructure development. Siemens' contribution of electrification technology further strengthens this collaboration, showcasing a model for international cooperation in tackling global challenges.
