Typhoon Shanshan Disrupts Japan with Heavy Rain and Destruction
  • Typhoon Shanshan hits Japan, causing widespread disruption.
  • Six people killed, over 100 injured, thousands without power.
  • Trains and flights cancelled, heavy rain and flooding expected.

Typhoon Shanshan, one of the strongest typhoons to hit Japan in decades, has caused widespread disruption across the country, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The storm made landfall in southwestern Japan on Thursday, bringing with it heavy rains, strong winds, and significant flooding. At least six people have been killed and more than 100 injured as a result of the typhoon's impact.

The highest level-five order was issued to millions of residents in the southern island of Kyushu as the storm approached on Thursday, with winds reaching up to 252 km/h. Though downgraded to a severe tropical storm, Shanshan continues to batter Japan with winds of 90km/h (56mph). Thousands of people remain without power as the storm makes its way northeast across the country.

The typhoon's path has left a significant impact on transportation systems. Numerous domestic flights have been cancelled by All Nippon Airways and Japan Airlines, while bullet train services between Tokyo and Osaka have been disrupted throughout Saturday and Sunday. Shinkansen bullet trains in Nagoya have also been suspended, with warnings of further service interruptions. The Japan Meteorological Agency has urged people to remain vigilant for landslides, flooding, and overflowing rivers, highlighting the ongoing danger posed by the storm.

The impact of Typhoon Shanshan has stunned many residents of Japan, who are accustomed to typhoons hitting the country's southernmost regions. “This is the first time I saw a typhoon sweeping across all of Japan,” one Tokyo resident told Reuters, expressing surprise at the unprecedented path of the storm. The typhoon is expected to continue its northeast trajectory, bringing further challenges and potential damage to the affected areas.
