On Saturday, the Indian Army reported the elimination of a terrorist and the recovery of warlike stores in an operation conducted in the Sopore area of Baramulla, Jammu and Kashmir. The Chinar Corps, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stated, "OP WATARGAM, Sopore #Baramulla. One terrorist eliminated and war-like stores recovered. Operation is continuing." The post was accompanied by a video showing an exchange of fire in the Watergam area of Sopore. The video was captioned, "#WATCH | J&K: Exchange of fire at Watergam area of Sopore. A terrorist has been eliminated and war-like stores have been recovered. Search operations are underway: Chinar Corps, Indian Army (Visuals deferred by unspecified time) pic.twitter.com/bk5bFCH1Fn August 24, 2024."
The Jammu and Kashmir Police also confirmed the incident in a post on X, saying, "exchange of fire in Sopore. "Alert security forces retaliated. Area #cordoned off. Searches underway. Further details shall follow." This encounter comes amid a surge in terrorist activities in the Jammu region in recent months, including encounters in Doda and Udhampur. The heightened security measures in Jammu and Kashmir are particularly relevant as the region is gearing up for its first assembly elections in ten years, scheduled for September 18, 25, and October 1, as announced by the Election Commission of India. The counting of votes will take place on October 4.
The upcoming elections will see the competition for 90 assembly constituencies, comprising 74 general seats, nine reserved for Scheduled Tribes, and seven for Scheduled Castes. Earlier on Saturday, security forces initiated a search operation in Sopore, Baramulla, following a brief exchange of fire with terrorists. The operation, which continues to this day, highlights the ongoing security challenges faced by the region, and the dedication of security forces in combating terrorism and maintaining peace.
