The demolition of a convention center co-owned by renowned Indian actor Nagarjuna Akkineni has sparked controversy in Telangana, with the state's Chief Minister, Revanth Reddy, drawing upon the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita to justify the action. Reddy declared that the demolition was in accordance with Lord Krishna's principles, emphasizing that his government would not tolerate encroachments on lakes, regardless of the influence of the individuals involved.
Reddy, while addressing a gathering organized by the Hare Krishna Movement, asserted that the Bhagavad Gita serves as a guiding force in combating illegal structures. He cited Lord Krishna's teachings on upholding Dharma (righteousness) in the face of Adharma (unrighteousness), even if it necessitates a battle, as the rationale behind the demolition. The Congress government, he stated, is committed to upholding this principle in its crackdown on illegal structures erected within water bodies by the HYDRAA (Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Monitoring and Protection).
The N-Convention Centre, demolished by HYDRAA officials on Saturday, was allegedly constructed on land encroaching upon Tammidikunta lake. The demolition was subject to a court order freezing the action, pending a legal resolution. However, the government maintained that the convention center was built in the FTL/Buffer zone without proper building permission. The demolition has triggered a public debate on the balance between development and environmental protection, with Nagarjuna Akkineni strongly condemning the action as unlawful. He asserted that he would have demolished the structure himself if the court's decision had favored the government's stance.
