The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) is set to establish a strong presence across India, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah announcing plans to establish an office in every state. This strategic move aims to combat the rising threat of drug trafficking and bolster national security. Shah, who inaugurated a zonal office of the NCB in Raipur during a three-day visit to Chhattisgarh, emphasized the government's unwavering commitment to eradicating the drug trade with the cooperation of state governments.
Shah underscored the gravity of the situation, stating that illicit narcotics trafficking significantly jeopardizes national security. He asserted that by employing a comprehensive and resolute strategy, India can effectively win the war against drugs. To support this claim, he highlighted the remarkable increase in NCB case registrations. From 2004 to 2014, the NCB registered 1,250 cases. However, in the following decade, from 2014 to 2024, the number of cases registered surged to around 4,150, representing a significant increase of 230%.
The government's decision to expand the NCB's reach to every state reflects the seriousness with which it views the drug menace. The increased presence of NCB offices across the country will enable enhanced coordination with state authorities, facilitating more effective intelligence gathering, investigation, and prosecution. This, in turn, will contribute to dismantling drug trafficking networks and deterring illicit drug activities. The ambitious plan to establish NCB offices in every state underscores the government's commitment to a comprehensive approach to combatting drug trafficking and safeguarding the nation's well-being.
