Mumbai Surpasses Seasonal Rainfall Quota

Mumbai Surpasses Seasonal Rainfall Quota
  • Mumbai surpasses seasonal rainfall quota.
  • Lake levels reach 95% capacity.
  • Heavy rain expected to continue.

The city of Mumbai has experienced a resurgence of rainfall, bringing relief after a dry spell that heightened heat and humidity. As of Saturday evening, Mumbai has recorded a total of 2,361 mm of rain since the onset of monsoon, exceeding the seasonal average of 2,319 mm. This surplus rainfall has resulted in a significant increase in the water levels of the seven lakes supplying the city, reaching 95.27% of their total capacity.

The recent rainfall has been particularly intense, with the Santacruz station recording 59 mm of rain between Friday and Saturday morning. While the intensity of the rain has moderated somewhat, the IMD has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, anticipating continued heavy showers in isolated pockets. The surrounding districts of Palghar and Raigad are experiencing heavier rainfall, with Palghar recording 111 mm of rain between Saturday morning and evening, and Raigad facing the possibility of extremely heavy rain in isolated areas.

The city’s temperatures have also been affected by the recent rainfall, with the IMD’s suburban station recording a maximum temperature of 27.8 degrees Celsius on Saturday, a slight drop from the record-breaking temperatures experienced earlier in the week. While the rainfall has brought some relief from the heat, the IMD predicts that gusty winds of 30-40 kmph are likely to persist on Sunday. The city’s water supply system has also been impacted by the recent rainfall, with a pipeline rupture in Powai causing a temporary disruption in water supply.
