The Malayalam film industry, affectionately known as Mollywood, is grappling with a storm of controversy fueled by allegations of sexual harassment and abuse, particularly against women professionals. The issue, which has been brewing beneath the surface for years, has been thrust into the harsh light of public scrutiny following the explosive findings of the Hema Committee. This 290-page report, commissioned by the Kerala government and led by retired Justice K Hema, delves into the systemic nature of harassment, abuse, and a disturbing “criminal nexus” within the industry, triggering a wave of high-profile resignations and widespread public outcry.
The public release of the Hema Committee report has sparked a domino effect within Mollywood. Two prominent figures, director Ranjith Balakrishnan and actor Siddique, have resigned from their influential positions amidst allegations of misconduct. Ranjith, a renowned filmmaker and the chairman of the Kerala Chalachitra Academy, stepped down in the wake of accusations of inappropriate behavior by a Bengali actress. The actress alleges that Ranjith engaged in misconduct during a film shoot several years ago. However, Ranjith vehemently denies the accusations, claiming to be the “real victim” of a targeted campaign. In an audio clip sent to a television channel, Ranjith stated, "I have been targeted by a certain section of people since the day I took charge as the Chairman of the Academy. I need to prove before the society that the allegations are untrue. I have decided to move legally and bring out the truth." He added, "Many people including the media are attacking me without understanding the truth. In this context, I have decided to step down from the post."
Similarly, actor Siddique, who held the position of general secretary of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), resigned after an actress accused him of sexual assault. The actress claims that Siddique sexually abused her during a film discussion when she was just 21 years old. Several AMMA members, including vice president Jayan Cherthala and actor Anoop Chandran, voiced their support for Siddique's decision to resign, arguing that it was morally and ethically necessary. The Hema Committee report, commissioned following an assault case involving an actress in 2017, was tasked with investigating the working conditions of women in the Malayalam film industry. The report, which took five years to materialize, unveils a harrowing picture of sexual harassment, exploitation, and ingrained gender discrimination prevalent in the industry. The report sheds light on a disturbing “power nexus” within Mollywood, where a select group of influential men, including producers, directors, and actors, allegedly control the fates of women professionals. Those who dare to defy their demands are systematically ostracized and pushed out of the industry, according to the report.
The release of the report has reverberated through the political landscape, eliciting strong reactions from political parties and public figures. The opposition Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) has called for a comprehensive investigation led by a team of women IPS officers. The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have demanded swift and stringent action against those implicated in the report. The Kerala State Women's Commission has also taken up the issue, recommending the establishment of grievance redressal committees on film sets. The Women in Cinema Collective (WCC), a group of women professionals in the Malayalam film industry, has welcomed the release of the Hema Committee report, stating in a Facebook post, “It has been a long journey for us! We believed that our fight for justice for all women wanting a dignified professional space in the film industry was the right fight. Today we stand vindicated. The publication of the Hema Committee report is another step that WCC has taken.” Ranjith's resignation has been met with approval from many, including state Cultural Affairs Minister Saji Cheriyan, who asserted that the Left government in Kerala has consistently supported victims of sexual harassment.
