The inaugural event of the two-day National Conference of District Judiciary saw prominent figures like Kapil Sibal, CJI Chandrachud, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi address the gathering, focusing on the crucial role of district courts in delivering justice. Senior advocate and Supreme Court Bar Association president Kapil Sibal, in his address, emphasized the importance of empowering trial courts, district courts, and sessions courts to function without fear or favor. He argued that these courts should not be seen as subordinate but as vital pillars of the justice system, highlighting their critical role in dispensing justice at the grassroots level.
Sibal’s remarks shed light on the need to instill confidence in the district judiciary, ensuring their judgments are not undermined and they feel empowered to deliver fair verdicts. He also expressed concern over the infrequency of bail being granted at the district court level, citing his own extensive legal experience and the CJI's observations on this issue. He underscored the importance of liberty as a cornerstone of democracy and stressed that any attempts to suppress it undermine the very fabric of a thriving democracy.
Echoing Sibal's call for empowerment, Chief Justice of India Chandrachud, during his speech, advocated for an end to the colonial-era practice of referring to district courts as subordinate. He recognized that seventy-five years after India's independence, it is time to shed this colonial mindset and acknowledge the vital role of the district judiciary in the justice system. The conference's focus on the district judiciary, coupled with the remarks from prominent legal figures, underscores the significance of these courts in ensuring a fair and just legal system in India.
