A harrowing incident of road rage unfolded in Pune on Saturday, leaving a 27-year-old woman injured and traumatized. The victim, Jerlyn Dsilva, was riding her two-wheeler with her children along the Baner-Pashan Road when she was subjected to a brutal attack by an enraged driver. The incident, captured on video and subsequently shared on social media, has sparked outrage and brought the issue of road rage back into the spotlight.
According to Dsilva's account, the ordeal began at Mahabaleshwar Chowk when she encountered the abusive driver. He persistently tried to block her path, refusing to allow her to move either left or right. When their vehicles came to a stop at a red light, Dsilva attempted to engage him in a dialogue, but he responded with verbal abuse and aggressive body language. As the signal turned green, Dsilva took a left turn, only to hear the driver's vehicle speeding towards her.
The driver, identified as a 57-year-old man, then proceeded to block Dsilva's path and, in a fit of rage, jumped out of his car. He grabbed her by the t-shirt and punched her repeatedly in the face, delivering three to four blows. Dsilva's account reveals a chilling scene of the driver's wife, who was present in the car, standing by without intervening. Furthermore, Dsilva claimed that the wife also assaulted her when she tried to take the car keys to prevent the man from fleeing.
The attack, which unfolded in broad daylight, ended when bystanders intervened and alerted the police. Dsilva was taken to a hospital for treatment, while the perpetrators, the driver and his wife, were apprehended by the police. The case has been registered at Chaturshrangi Police Station and is under investigation. The authorities have booked the 57-year-old man and his wife under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Motor Vehicles Act.
This incident underscores the growing concern about road rage and its devastating consequences. The aggression displayed by the driver, who chose to resort to violence over resolving a minor traffic issue, reflects a disturbing trend of escalating anger and intolerance on our roads. The absence of intervention by the driver's wife, despite witnessing the assault, further raises questions about the lack of empathy and accountability in such situations. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for responsible driving, anger management, and swift action against perpetrators of road rage to ensure the safety of all road users.
