Karnataka Battles Heavy Rains and Landslide Fears
  • Karnataka faces heavy rains with red alerts for five districts.
  • Landslides are warned in 31 subdivisions across the state.
  • Dakshina Kannada suffers major damage with five lives lost.

Karnataka is grappling with the relentless fury of the monsoon, facing heavy rains and a heightened risk of landslides across the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for five districts – Shivamogga, Udupi, Chikkamagaluru, and Kodagu – signifying a high risk of severe weather events and urging immediate action. Furthermore, the IMD has warned of potential landslides in 31 sub-divisions across Karnataka, emphasizing the widespread threat posed by the monsoon's intensity.

The IMD has forecast heavy to extremely heavy rainfall (64.5 mm to over 204.5 mm) for the coastal and southern regions of Karnataka today, with similar heavy to very heavy rainfall expected to continue tomorrow. A red warning (meaning 'take action') has been issued for South Interior Karnataka, while an orange alert (meaning 'be prepared') prevails across other parts of the state. This indicates a heightened level of preparedness and caution is necessary throughout the region.

The impact of the monsoon has been particularly severe in Dakshina Kannada, where five lives have been lost and 106 houses have been completely destroyed since June. Over 100 people have been displaced, requiring the establishment of relief camps to provide shelter. The relentless rains have caused the Netravati River to overflow, submerging houses and prompting rescue operations by the NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) and the fire brigade. The district administration has taken steps to mitigate the situation, closing schools and colleges on July 31 due to the severe weather. They have urged the public to exercise caution, avoid low-lying areas, and stay away from water bodies. Fisherfolk have been advised not to venture into the sea.
